English/Language Arts:3/15/08

Hi all,

This week we will finish The Circuit. Students shall complete an on demand quote sandwich sometime during the middle of the week.

Many students did not turn in their homework assignment (quote sandwich from independent reading) on Friday.  They should complete this during the weekend and turn it in on Monday.  For those that completed this assignment, I will count this assignment towards both trimester 2 and 3.  Therefore, they will not have to turn in the first quote sandwich due in two weeks.

I expect that all students revise their quote sandwiches at least 3 times (if their piece does not meet expectation.) I will provide them specific suggestions in writing that they should incorporate into their revision. Usually, students will have their work returned to them by the following day. That evening, they are to revise and return to school the next day.

Home Reading - Response to Literature

All students must respond to their independent reading using the quote sandwich format.  These responses are due approximately every two weeks with the first due on Friday March 28.  The trimester schedule is below:

Note: Students may turn in quote sandwiches BEFORE  the due date.  Students may revise their work as many times as they like-however, I do require that students revise assignments below meeting expectation at least 3 times.  Also, should a student struggle with this writing assignment, they may email to me their work for my suggestions, come for extra help at lunch, or come for extra help after school. 

Also, about 60 of our 74 families have signed up for the listserv.  If you have not done so already please do so.  This allows us to send electronic messages to you (in lieu of the cavern in backpacks).  Additionally, I like to email individual parents when students are not turning in work regularly.  This has been very helpful to parents in the past in keeping on top of what is really happening in school.

This week students will continue to investigate pure substances, mixtures & solutions.  Once students complete the set of lab stations they will have a take home assessment to complete. 

Students will get back their quizzes this week.  If students would like to retake this assessment they should arrange a time to do so.  However, if students did not complete their study guide they will not be eligible for the retake.
