Element Team - Weekly Updates
Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School of Coventry

Exchange City:

This is a very exciting time of year for Exchange City.  We are working hard to be sure this is a worthwhile experience for our students.

As we enter the final stretch of Exchange City, all students are in the process of applying for jobs.  They have searched the Exchange City classified ads, created resumes, and have filled out job applications.  On Wednesday, April 30th, we have adult volunteers (superintendents, school committee...) coming in  to interview the students for the jobs they have applied for.  We are still in need of several more adults to assist us in this process.  If anyone is available, please contact Mrs. Tefft at tefftkathleen@coventryschools.net

We encourage you to engage your child in a conversation about the jobs they have applied for and why they chose these jobs.  They will also benefit from any suggestions you may be able to provide regarding the interview process.  We will also cover this in class.

Our team has created a "Team Store" through Advisory.  Students will be able to purchase pens, pencils, highlighters, and other schools supplies each day after homeroom announcements.  Hopefully this will help alleviate the problem of students coming to class without the basic tools necessary to have a successful school day.

Hello Students and Parents,

By now, some of you may have heard that I will be going to the high school next year.  The job fair was held yesterday afternoon, and I bid into the position of guidance counselor at Coventry High School.  I will be responsible for sophomores and seniors (10th & 12th) for the 2008-2009 school year.

While I am sad to leave the middle school students along with many of my friends and colleagues, I am very excited about this next phase of my career.  This was a difficult decision to make, but the guidance positions only come along once in a while...if you don't take it when you can, you may not get another opportunity for many years.  I hope all of you understand.

I enjoyed working with each of you this past year and am proud of the progress so many of you have made.  I am looking forward to seeing you at the high school.  Best wishes to all of you.  Stay in touch.  Have a safe and fun-filled summer.

Mrs. Tefft

Social Studies:

May 1, 2008

We will be studying Ancient China for the balance of the school year. Students will be focusing on the role geography played in the development of Chinese civilization. The various Chinese dynasties, the role of family and tradition, Chinese inventions and engineering, architecture, art, calligraphy, Chinese philosophers such as Lao Tzu, Confucius, and martial arts such as Tai Chi. We will also look at China's role in the 21st Century, including population, economics, pollution, and politics (Communism, Tibet, the upcoming Summer Olympics in Beijing, etc.)

(Parent FYI) - We spent an entire class  re-organizing all Social Studies binders. They should be set up in four (4) sections as follows:

  1) Teacher Handouts - Includes general charts, graphic organizers, instructions, and models students will be using throughout the year.

  2) Classwork/Homework - Nystrom World History Atlas Checklist - Completed atlas worksheets in numerical order

  • Ancient World  worksheets - order by chapter/section
  • map activities
  • graphic organizers
  •
  • 3) Test/Quiz Checklist - graded tests, quizzes and writing assignments (*Parents - Please review your child's test/quiz grades and look for positive/negative trends) Please note that tests and quizzes are not necessarily scored in the same S.S. content strand(s), and test scores are weighted more.
  • 4) S.S. Notebook - to include notes, some in-class assignments , warm-ups, and homework reflections.
  •
  • Students will be expected to maintain their binders and be able to use them to demonstrate their work at Parent-Teacher Portfolio Conferences in the spring.
