Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes each day.  All books are recorded in their ELA Reading Folder.

Trimester I:  Narrative writing, myths, legends, science

                                  fiction, and mystery

Trimester II:  Content integrated research report, historical

                              fiction

Trimester III: Persuasive essay, novel study

Responses to Literature will be assigned several times throughout each trimester.  The assignment will vary (summary, retell plus, quote sandwich, character analysis)

Students will be assessed on their speaking, listening, and viewing skills throughout the year.  This will be done through formal oral presentations, participation in class, group work and collaboration with each other.

Over he course of the year, students will receive focused language instruction.  We will focus on the conventions of writing including grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

SUCCESS

To succeed in math class students must:

Ø Respect all people in our classroom

Ø Come prepared & ready to learn

(have binder, pencil, eraser, completed work; pay attention)

Ø Consistently put forth their best effort

Ø Participate in group work

Ø Keep a neat & organized binder

Ø ASK QUESTIONS when they don’t understand

GRADES

Students will be graded using the math rubric.  All students should have a rubric in the POW section of their binder.  It is also located on my web page.     (Please note: no work = 1)

Tests & quizzes typically receive concept & skill grades while POWs typically receive problem solving & communication grades.

POWs will be accepted up to 1 week late but the highest possible grade will be a 2 if handed in late. (Don’t forget, students have the every other Friday work room to work on make-up work.)

EXTRA HELP

Thursdays from 2:25 - 3:15

WEB PAGE

My web page is up but 1 or 2 links are not connected yet.  I try to keep it up-to-date weekly (not daily) but I cannot guarantee this.

COMMUNICATION

E-mail is always good but I do not have a computer at home so I can only access e-mail from school.  I typically check my e-mail 1st thing in the morning but that may be the only time I get to check it each day.   If you need to contact me immediately, send in a note in an envelope with your child or put a note in your child’s agenda.

SYLLABUS

My syllabus can be found on my web page also.  Short version is:

Trimester 1 – similarity & ratios, proportions, percents     Trimester 2 – 3-D measurement, integers, equations     Trimester 3 – linear relationships & geometry

Welcome to Element & Here’s to a great year!
