Example of character descriptive paragraph: The Circuit

Francisco first came to the United States as an illegal immigrant when he was about four years old. He learns early on that he and his siblings must help out the family in order that they can earn enough money to survive.  When he is about six, the reader finds him taking care of his baby brother while his family picks cotton.  This is a tremendous responsibility, but Francisco willingly helps his family out even though he secretly wishes to be with them helping in the fields.  Francisco is sensitive to others.  He learns from another migrant worker the necessity to stand up for his and other's dignity.  As a result, he stands up to a bully at Tent City in order that a weaker friend can enjoy a game of "kick the can."  Most of all Francisco is a family person.  Time and again due to the poverty and circumstances that the family live in Francisco is disappointed or hurt.  In one particular scene, Francisco's father kills the family's pet bird because he can not handle the screeching of the bird.  Francisco saddened with the bird's death first prays for his pet bird and then prays for his father.  Francisco, a young man with an old heart, recognizes the pressure his father is under that drove him to do this despicable deed.

Example of a dialogue

Text Box: Francisco
Mama, I miss El Perico (pet bird)

Mama, Papa is always so angry. I am worried about him. Papa would not do this on purpose. He is working too hard.
I am getting older now, Mama. Maybe I can work all year. You know I could help out more.

Mama, I love school. I promise I will do well. Then I can really help Papa.

Text Box: Mama
Fransisco, please stop your crying.
I know Panchito. Your father...
We have no choice, Panchito. If we do not work, we do not eat. La Bolla will end soon. Papa is worried that we will not find work for weeks.
No, Panchito! We came here so our children can have an education. You need to go to school. An education will get you out of the fields and into a better life. Your father and I never had a chance...what with no education. This is something we can give all you children. This is our gift to you.
