Students should be reading 30 minutes nightly.

English:

All good things must come to an end. Friday was a sad day as we all said good bye to Miss Mariorenzi. She added so much to our class and we will not forget her. Many students have asked that I take some sick time, hoping that perhaps Miss M. could come back and take my place. I must admit, I am feeling a little warm and feverish.

Next week begins the final session of NECAP! Students will spend some time in English looking at some science questions and reviewing where we can. Most certainly, I'll need some help in this area! The entire team feels committed to helping all students demonstrate proficiency in this area. Past experience tells us that Synergy students excel on all NECAP testing, and we know they'll do it one more time.

Students will also be given the opportunity to finish THE WATSONS GO TO BIRMINGHAM - 1963 assessment. We'll also have some practice with commas.

I have attached a copy of the final reading log to the website. This log is due no later than June 13th. You will have plenty of time to complete this log and are encouraged to turn it in as soon as it is finished. We can always make additions if necessary.

Have a great week!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns via e-mail.

This week we will be taking the science NECAP state test. We began preparing last week and we will continue on Monday. Testing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. It is very important that all students get a full night of sleep before testing and eat breakfast before coming to school. Our team did very well on the math and ELA testing, so I am confident they will do the same on the science testing.

We began a writing assignment last week called - RAFT. We will work on that when we are not testing and I will announce a due date during the week.

  • Social Studies:   Old Printing Press

This week we will be moving on to look at the question, "How does technology affect Today's Printing Presspeople's lives?" We will begin by looking at the factors that contribute to advances in technology and attempting to understand why some groups and regions developed at a quicker rate. We will then look at some of the specific inventions that drastically changed the manner in which people live. Specifically, we will examine the printing press and iron. Students will then be asked to examine technology that exists today and identify modern items that have had the same impact, and attempt to create a new item that they think will change the future.

B period will continue to work on the five paragraph report answering the question, "Why do empires rise and fall?" The rough draft should be completed this week and the final draft will be due at the beginning of next week. Also, we will begin to examine the question, "Why do people live the way they do?" • Math:

The parent site for the Connected Math Project is still available:
    http://connectedmath.msu.edu/parents/

There are some additional sites of importance. The Glencoe site is for the Algebra 1 textbook. This site is a link for online assistance for all the sections in the textbook. The Glencoe link will remain on the web site all year.

Additional web sites that I encourage all students to visit throughout the school year to practice on any number of topics are the following two sites. The first is the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives that we used in class at the end of last year. The second site is www.math.com, which is a very good resource for students with interactive practice links in many topics and instant feedback. I will leave these sites up all year.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns via e-mail.

  • Health:

All classes are presently concentrating their studies on teenage pregnancy and parenthood versus adult pregnancy and parenthood-----the physical, emotional, social, educational and economical implications. Students will be responsible for a Quote Sandwich Reading Assignment.
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country--twice as high as England and Canada. Approximately 820,000 U.S. teenage girls get pregnant each year.

Fast Facts: *One harsh reality of teenage pregnancy is that in many cases, the fathers are out of the picture by the time the baby arrives.
*Teen mothers are less likely to complete high school.
*Approximately eight out of ten teen mothers end up on welfare.
*Abstinence is the only guaranteed method of birth control to prevent teen pregnancy.
*Nearly six out of ten teenage boys and seven out of ten teenage girls who are sexually active wish they had waited until they were older to have sex.
