FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (November 2007)

Activity/Series: Develop the Family Engagement Action Plan and Professional Development Plan

Changes in Instruction:  What will teachers do to ensure students learn and develop the learning behaviors identified in the first column?  (Be sure that the instructional practices you identify will address every student learning behavior and connect to the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards.)  Include all Changes in Instruction from the School Improvement Action Plan Template that this activity/series will impact.

·         Develop relationships with parent/guardians to support student learning.

·         Understand the role of community agencies in supporting schools.

·         Gather information about their students from parents/guardians, colleagues and the students themselves.

·         Maintain records of student learning and communicate student progress to students, parents/guardians, and other colleagues.

·         Interact with students, colleagues, parents, and others in a professional manner that is fair and equitable.

Professional Development (PD) in support of Changing Instruction: For each change in instructional practice, detail the PD that will support making those changes. Include:

1.        Describe the PD.

2.        Who will facilitate the PD?

3.        When the PD is scheduled to take place.

4.        How will the professional development implementation be monitored?

Collaboration and Support: For each major PD program, describe how teachers will be provided opportunities for ongoing collaboration and discussion regarding their PD and putting it into practice.

Resources, School and District: What school-wide and district supports and resources will be necessary to implement the PD? Indicate the source of funds for each program of PD. (e. g., Article 31, Title I, etc.).

Evaluating Results/Reporting to Families and Community:

1.        What evidence will the school use to draw conclusions about the impact and effectiveness of each major PD program?

2.        Who will be responsible for organizing the evaluation?

3.        When will the evaluation activities take place and when will they be completed?

1. The Family Engagement Action Team met on October 12th for an in-service day to conduct a self-assessment and develop the action plan/steps. A sub-committee met on November 19th for an in-service day to develop the professional development plan to support the implementation of the action plan. The action team will meet every other month to monitor and implement, and self assess the Action Plan.

2.  Dr. Michael Almeida, Principal, facilitated the development of the in service days.

3. The PD was scheduled for October 12th and November 19th. We will meet every other month on the first Monday of that month. Faculty meetings, CPT meetings, and department meeting will be utilized as needed.

4. The National PTA Schools of Excellence Assessment Tool was used to assess our level of family/community engagement. The tool is aligned with Joyce Epstein’s six types of School-Family-Community Partnerships. The tool is also aligned with Turning Points 2000.

The action team will be developing and distributing surveys to gather information/practices regarding family/community engagement. SALT Survey data will also be used to assess practices. The National PTA Schools of Excellence Assessment Tool will also be used to assess progress. The Family Engagement Action Team and school administrators will monitor implementation of the plan.

The School Improvement Team and the Family Engagement Action Team meet monthly to implement and assess the plan. Teachers meet during CPT, department, and faculty meetings to engage in professional conversations, participate in and reflect on professional development.
